Sharon McCarthy born to Bandon. Self thought artist worked with an exhibition company for many years and stayed in touch with my creative side here working in Graphic Design. I did many projects e.g. cartoon animation for children’s rooms, hand painting furniture and sign writing in these years also.
Colour is my big incentive in my work from the time of subject choice to finishing a picture. I love introducing new colours to my paintings and like experimenting with strong contrast colours, complimentary colours and with soft sensual colours. Concept is important – on starting a new painting I think about my concept first, i.e. colours used, mood, tones, values and shapes and this is how I get feeling from my paintings. A loose style painting is what I like most and I mainly paint with painting knives in a fast and energetic movement to create a painting with a raw, textured meaningful style.
I continue to work from home in Ovens (dairyfarm), Co. Cork where I am constantly inspired by my surroundings of fields, trees, and animals. I am also hugely inspired by Kerry (Derrynane/Caherdaniel – a magical place). In Kerry my inspiration comes from the sea and mountains so rustic and alive. I allow my palette knife to capture what I see and feel, to produce a painting with a heart beat. Irish landscapes/seacapes are fast moving and this is how there is high energy in my Irish paintings. My woodland paintings are inspired from my past where I grew up in Bandon surrounded by woods and wild flowers. I have been described by galleries to have a bold energetic style which creates a painting with life and emotion.
